2004 PA Nanotechnology Conference a Huge Success

With over 400 registrants, The Business of Nano: Pennsylvania Nanotechnology Conference 2004, which took place May 25 and 26 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center was declared a huge success by its organizers and sponsors. Regional business, economic development and regional colleges and universities were well-represented, coming together to share ideas and learn about the current and future state of nanotechnology.

One of the key themes that arose during the two day event was the fact that because nanotechnology is new, regional leaders have not yet been defined. Regional dominance is up for grabs, said Josh Wolfe, Editor Forbes/Wolfe Nanotech Report and Managing Partner, Lux Capital.

"Why not Philadelphia? Why not Pennsylvania?" asked Mark Modzelewski, Founder & Executive Director, NanoBusiness Alliance.

"Nanotechnology is an engine that will drive industrial change in the coming years," said Dennis Yablonsky, Secretary of the Department of Community and Economic Development for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The conference is just one example of how the Commonwealth is positioning itself to ensure it is a key player in this building wave development that promises to create a new generation of jobs for Pennsylvanians.

In addition to plenary session speakers who included Josh Wolfe and Secretary Dennis Yablonsky, various tracks and panel discussions included a University Overview Session, Industry Overview Session and highlights of Pennsylvania Nanotech companies including: Authentix, Inc.; Dev Mar Group, Ltd.; Advanced Fibers & Powders LLC; BioNanomatrix; Industrial Science & Technology Network, Inc. (ISTN); Applied Research & Photonics, Inc.; BioSense Corporation; MACH 1, Inc.; IQE, Inc.; Crystalplex Corporation; Nanomat, Inc.; Nanova LLC; and Glucose Sensing Technologies, LLC.

Day two tracks included panel discussions of nano applications in medical & pharmaceutical, chemicals & materials, electronics and semiconductors, track sessions for company presentations, as well as NANO 101 and Nanotechnology Education in Pennsylvania.
